A loan request for objects from the Ipswich Borough Council world cultures collection has been received by Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service from West Suffolk Council (IPSMG:LO.2021.9).
This loan request is for the following items:
1. IPSMG: ISH.2013.114 – small drum
2. IPSMG: R.1990.4.139 – tooth necklace
3. IPSMG: R.1978.43 – cowhide shield
4. IPSMG: R.1945.130.20 (DLJ.389.76) – spear
5. IPSMG: ISH.2020.02 – metal arm ring
6. IPSMG: R.1925.148.250 – metal arm ring
These are requested for a forthcoming temporary exhibition at Moyse’s Hall, Bury St Edmunds which also includes three costumes from the Marvel Studios film ‘Black Panther’. These costumes as well as the requested items were previously included in ‘The Power of Stories’ exhibition at Christchurch Mansion.
The exhibition at Moyse’s Hall is being created with the support of Aspire Black Suffolk and Suffolk County Council. The loaned items will complement the modern film costumes and provide a historical and artistic context thereby enhancing the impact of the exhibition on visitors.
To agree the loan request for six items from the world cultures collection. Loan to commence 1 December 2021 Loan ends: 30 April 2022
Reason:
This loan provides an opportunity to promote Ipswich’s museum collection to a regional audience as well as support a project being led by the Black community in Suffolk. These objects were previously not on display and would otherwise be in storage.
