OD/20/75 Bus Shelters

Decision Maker: Officer Decision

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

As part of its wider objectives to encourage the usage of public transport, the Council provides, in its own right, a number of bus shelters in various locations across Ipswich and also provides, on behalf of Suffolk County Council, bus stops, bus stop clearway restrictions and associated infrastructure. The Council receives a number of requests for the provision of new bus shelters and holds a waiting list of such sites.

The Council has now decided to provide a number of new or replacement bus shelters at the locations listed below, including various associated infrastructure where relevant. This is in furtherance of the objectives referred to above and, in respect of replacement bus shelters, as part of the sound management of the Council’s public transport assets as the relevant existing bus shelters are in need of replacement.

1. Grove Lane, outside Alexandra Park – provision of new bus shelter.

2. Hawthorn Drive, outside 433/435 (opposite junction with Greenfinch Avenue) – provision of new bus shelter, extension to area of hardstanding and extension of bus stop clearway restriction.

3. Stoke Park Drive, near junction with Winchester Way – replacement of existing bus shelter.

4. Cambridge Drive, outside Vinnicombe Court (opposite junction with Chesterton Close) – replacement of existing bus shelter.

5. Goddard Road East, near junction with White House Road – provision of new bus shelter.

Additionally, the Council owns an existing bus shelter located opposite 14 Maryon Road. This bus stop has not been in use for some time and so it has also been decided to relocate this bus shelter to the following bus stop where there have been requests for the provision of a bus shelter:

6. Holywells Road (inbound), near junction with Toller Road – provision of bus shelter and area of hardstanding.

The main alternative option would be not to provide the bus shelters (except at the bus stop listed on Goddard Road East where the provision is a planning condition relating to the nearby office development on White House Road). However, this would be contrary to the Council’s public transport objectives and in respect of the replacement bus shelters would result in the existing bus shelters having to be removed without being replaced which could be expected to lead to complaints from affected passengers. In respect of the bus shelter at the Maryon Road site, relocating it enables it to be of use to the public.

Where new bus shelters are being installed at bus stops that do not currently have a bus shelter, a consultation has been undertaken with affected residents and no written objections have been received. The permission of Suffolk County Council as Highway Authority has been sought and obtained.

Decision:

In accordance with the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1953, to install new or replacement bus shelters with associated infrastructure at the bus stops listed above, including the relocation of the bus shelter currently installed opposite 14 Maryon Road.
