The Council owns and operates an off-street public car park known as ‘Upper Orwell Street (South)’ situated on land accessed off Upper Barclay Street in Ipswich. The surface of this car park has become worn out and in need of substantial re-surfacing.
On 21st September 2020, the Council will be opening a new public car park opposite this site, to be known as ‘Upper Orwell Street (North)’.
As such, it has been decided to temporarily close the Upper Orwell Street (South) car park from the same date in order to allow re-surfacing works to take place. It is expected that the works will take approximately 4 weeks to complete, and once complete the car park will re-open to the public.
The main alternative would be to not carry out the re-surfacing works at this time or not to close the car park to do so, but the car park is in need of substantial re-surfacing in order to provide a better quality facility to the public and avoid the risk of injury caused by a poor quality surface, and closing the car park allows the work to be undertaken more efficiently and safely. The new Upper Orwell Street (North) car park has a greater capacity than the Upper Orwell Street (South) car park, and so there will be no reduction in the current level of public parking supply in this area.
To close the Upper Orwell Street (South) car park for a temporary period (expected to be no longer than 4 weeks) from 21st September 2020 to allow for the car park to be re-surfaced.
