The Council has been working on a joint project with Suffolk County Council to install raised bus stop kerbs at bus stops on the routes of Services 10 and 16 in Ipswich, together with associated facilities such as bus stop clearway restrictions and areas of hardstanding. The provision of raised bus stop kerbs is considered important to help passengers with mobility difficulties get on and off buses more easily as otherwise the gap between the floor of the bus and the kerb can make it difficult or in some cases impossible for access
to be gained.
The provision of bus stop clearway restrictions helps to ensure that the driver of the bus can pull the bus up flush against the raised kerb as these restrictions prohibit motor vehicles, except buses and others allowed
in law, from stopping at the bus stop during the times at which the clearway restriction is in operation.
Proposals to install bus stop clearway restrictions have previously been the subject of consultation with affected residents and businesses, with objections being determined by the relevant Council Area Committee.
In order to complete the project, it is necessary to provide additional funding and as such, following consultation with the Portfolio Holder for Environment & Climate Change, it has been decided to contribute an additional £16,000 towards this project. This will be transferred to Suffolk County Council who are
arranging for the works to take place via Suffolk Highways.
The main alternative option would be to not provide this additional funding but then the project would not be completed at this time.
