A Loan Request was received from Colchester Borough Council (CIMS) (LO.2018.19)
Loan Request Details
· Ostrich feathers (3), part of a collection of clothing belonging to the William family of Winston Hall Farm, near Debenham in Suffolk, c. 1900 (IPSMG:R.2009.84.12, 14, 15).
· Hair pin decorated with Kingfisher feathers, Chinese, 19th century (IPSMG:R.1836.433).
· Silk and silk worms, 20 specimens arranged in a glass-fronted display case by Mr Flower in 1919 (IPSMG:R.1919.10).
· Cotton plant Herbarium sheet (selection to be confirmed).
This loan request is for a new temporary exhibition in the Garden Room at Hollytrees Museum in Colchester entitled ‘Wild Wardrobe’ which is on for four months. The items chosen illustrate the use of natural materials in clothing; for example, the silk worms relate to the production of silk thread from cocoons. All the items requested are not represented in the Colchester collections. Two – the hair pin and the silk and silk worms – are on display in Ipswich Museum, but their temporary removal will have a minimal effect on the galleries and they will be temporarily replaced. The ostrich feathers and the herbarium specimen are in store.
