Purpose:

Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service - Early Medieval pottery samples (LO.2018.10)

This loan request is for a selection of pottery sherds* excavated in Ipswich and elsewhere in Suffolk for a medieval and later pottery type series for the county. This is a project conducted by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service on behalf of English Heritage with the objective of creating a single reference source for researchers studying the pottery made and used in Suffolk.

The sherds requested come from a range of excavations in Ipswich conducted since the 1960s as well as other sites in Suffolk, such as those excavated by Basil Brown. The initial request is currently for 56 samples, but is likely to rise slightly following further research. In all cases however only one or two sherds have been selected from each individual archaeological site.

* In archaeology, a sherd, or more precisely, potsherd, is commonly a historic or prehistoric fragment of pottery, although the term is occasionally used to refer to fragments of stone and glass vessels, as well.
