Purpose:

This decision relates to two extensions of existing loans and three new loan requests.

 

Leighton House Museum, London (LO.2011.14)

 

Pompeian tripod table, late 19th century.

 

This loan commenced in October 2011 and was renewed in October 2014 for a further three-year period. The decision is for an extension of the loan for a further three years to October 2020.

 

Leighton House Museum is a prestigious central London venue. It was the home and studio of the Victorian artist Frederic Lord Leighton and has been a museum since 1929. The table is on display in the Arab Hall, one of the principal exhibition spaces at the venue. Leighton House Museum.

 

The National Horseracing Museum, Newmarket (LO.2015.2)

This loan commenced in April 2016 and is currently for a two-year period until April 2018. The decision is to extend the loan from 1st April 2018 for a further two year period.

 

British Museum (Dept. of Britain, Europe & Prehistory) (LO2018.04)

 

This request is for a group of approximately 470 artefacts which were found in the late 1940s and early 1950s in several gravel pits at Barnham Heath, south of Thetford. The excavations were undertaken by Basil Brown on behalf of Ipswich Museum.

 

the Brecklands Palaeolithic Project would like to borrow the Barnham Heath artefacts for a new technological and typological study.

 

The results of the research would be made available to Ipswich Museum and would enhance our current documentation of this site.

 

Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life (LO2018.05)

·         ‘Brighton Beach, study’, 1825, ink and wash (R.1925-112)

·         ‘The Windmill’, undated, pencil drawing (R.1940-26.1)

 

This loan request is for a temporary exhibition, ‘Changing Tides: Visions of a Norfolk Coast’ at one of the ten sites operated by Norfolk Museums Service (NMS).

 

Both works are in good condition. Neither have previously been out on loan as far as is known.

 

The Munnings Art Museum, Dedham (LO2018.06)

Sir Alfred Munnings (1878 – 1959)

“H.M. King George V on his pony ‘Jock’ at Sandringham”, 1937, oil on canvas (R.1936-350)

 

This loan request is for a temporary exhibition which celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of which Munnings was president from 1944-49. One of the themes of the exhibition will be aspects of power and patronage.
