OD-17-28 Loan of Gainsborough art to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany

Decision Maker: Officer Decision

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

This decision relates to a loan request from the following:

Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany (LO.2018.3)

This loan request is for a temporary exhibition, ‘Gainsborough: The Landscape of the Modern World’ at one of Germany’s largest and most prestigious museums, the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The requested works are all by Thomas Gainsborough and three are currently on display in the Wolsey Art Gallery. (‘Cottage Door with Girl and Pigs’ is currently in store.)

However, by the time of the proposed loan in 2018 the Wolsey Art Gallery will have been re-hung to accommodate the enhanced Wolsey exhibition and all four works will be off display. Their place will have been taken by several Gainsborough portraits which will either be brought out of store or from the existing display in the Suffolk Artists gallery.

This is a major international exhibition and it is important for the Ipswich Borough Council Collection to be represented. There are also opportunities for increasing our understanding of Gainsborough’s work by participating in the exhibition and promoting Ipswich as a cultural tourism destination.

The following to be loaned:

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) (4):

·         Holywells Park, Ipswich, 1748-50, oil on canvas, (R.1992-5)

·         View near the Coast, 1750-55, oil on canvas (R.1941-76)

·         A Pool in the Woods, 1750-55, oil on canvas, (R.1924-81

·         Cottage Door with Girl and Pigs, c. 1786, oil on canvas, (R.1982-91)

Loan commences: 2 March 2018

Loan ends: 3 June 2018

To enable the Ipswich collections to contribute to an international exhibition and to continue the Museum Service’s partnership working with a network of cultural organisations.
