The Council has been requested to provide a financial contribution towards the cost of reconfiguring and refurbishing Ipswich railway station forecourt, alongside funding being provided by Suffolk County Council (SCC) and the train operating company Abellio Greater Anglia (AGA). This is part of a wider project to upgrade the interior of the railway station, which has also received national funding.
The forecourt is being redesigned in order to give greater emphasis to pedestrians, cyclists and bus users and to make a significant upgrade to the aesthetics of the area.
At its meeting of 25th February 2015 the Council approved its Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP) for 2015/2016 onwards which includes the provision of £120,000 for the railway station forecourt project.
The railway station forecourt is an important transport interchange but also is the first impression that visitors arriving to Ipswich by rail will see. As such, the Council considers it important that the area be both functional and of a high urban design quality. This is one of the projects identified within the Ipswich Vision.
A decision has been taken to provide the £120,000 funding contribution for the project in accordance with the MTFP. The funding will be sent to SCC as they are procuring the works. It will be conditioned that the funds can only be used to undertake the agreed enhancements to the station forecourt by the end of October 2016.
