OD/14/58 Showcasing the Local Economy Platform

Decision Maker: Officer Decision

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Is Key decision?: No

Is subject to call in?: No

Purpose:

1.    Background

Showcasing the Local Economy to all Young People in Suffolk has been identified as a key strand of Suffolk’s Raising the Bar programme; a joined-up approach to raising attainment and aspiration for all young people in Suffolk. It also forms a key objective of the Suffolk Growth Strategy. It supports the IBC Economic Strategy and its Implementation Plan’s focus on jobs and skills in Ipswich.

The showcasing the local economy web platform is being progressed through collaborative partnership District, Borough and County Council. The platform will provide a vehicle for employers to engage directly with young people to increase their knowledge of the local economy and future employment opportunities, promote their sector and offer experiences of work.

2.    Decision

IBC will invest £24,000 over 5 years to support the development and maintenance of the Platform. This will be matched by £120,000 from Suffolk County Council and £124,000 from the other district and borough councils.

3.    Reasons for recommendation

Feedback received from local employers highlights the need to provide stronger links between businesses, education and young people. A jointly procured local authority platform will ensure that all young people and parents in Suffolk are able to access the same, free information about the local economy, links to local businesses and experience of work inside and outside the Borough. This will help them make better informed decisions about their future, raise aspiration and support economic growth.

This proposal was discussed with PH and Leader of the Council who are supportive.
